It is essential when planting new plants or transplanted plants
to give them the best possible help to establish as quickly as possible.
Use wind netting firmly fixed into the ground with treated wooden
stakes to protect new planting. Also ensure all plants are staked
firmly if necessary and tied with a suitable material.
It also helps to put water retention granules in the planting holes
and water ground thoroughly after planting and mulch well with a
suitable material. Consider leaky pipe or similar to cut down on
watering with a hose pipe.
Rabbits can cause a lot of damage to new plants, especially herbaceous
perennials. Consider netting your garden if they are a severe problem
or protect individual plants with netting or prickly shrub cuttings.
Brand deterrents recommended by Gardening Which are Renardine and
Scoot.
Always put tree guards on new trees. Professional pest control firms
will provide a clearance service. If you are considering netting
the garden use 1.5.m. high netting and bury at least the bottom
15cm angling it outwards to stop the rabbits from digging under.
Use stakes every 5.m. and put a straining wire along the top. If
you need a temporary barrier whilst plants get established 0.6.m.
high fence is sufficient. No plant is said to be rabbit proof but
in general they dislike very aromatic plants, prickles and spines,
tough leathery leaves.
